The Howell Planning Commission voted June 17 to recommend that the City Council rezone 401 E. Grand River (parcel 4717-36-307-043) from B-1 (Local Business) to CBD (Central Business). Planning Consultant Paul Montagno told the commission the new owner proposes a restaurant at the location and noted the property has a history of enforcement and earlier attempts to reopen as a gas station. The motion to recommend approval was made by Mayor Nikolas Hertrich, supported by Commissioner Jeff Schuett, and passed on a 7-0 roll-call vote.
During discussion Commissioner Trevor Gronseth asked about building-to-sidewalk allowances in the CBD and Montagno said screening requirements will apply and that detailed site-plan matters would be handled later. Public commenters raised traffic and parking concerns: Sarah Moran told the commission she "Would like to see a light at Barnard and Grand River," and Stephanie Booth of 510 Maple voiced her support for the rezoning. The parcel sits inside the City's DDA boundary and the commission's recommendation now goes to City Council for final action.
