The Howell Planning Commission voted unanimously June 17 to approve a special land use allowing Monarch Montessori to operate a private school in an existing church at 1385 W. Grand River (parcel id# 4717-35-100-024). Planning Consultant Paul Montagno presented the application and said, "The school does have a license for up to 24 students but plan to operate around 16 children." The motion to approve was made by Commissioner Jacob Schlittler and supported by Commissioner Jeff Schuett; the vote carried 7-0.
Monarch Montessori's proposal was presented as a required special land use because the private school would operate within an R-1 district building used as a church. Montagno told the commission that the building's parking accommodates drop-off and pick-up. Applicant Stephanie Kooiker was present during the hearing; no members of the public spoke in opposition during the public hearing, which opened at 7:14 p.m. and closed at 7:15 p.m. The commission's approval allows the school to proceed under the terms of the special-use approval and applicable city procedures.
