Hennepin County awards $1.29 million in spring 2026 youth activities grants

Jennifer Yang, director of grants management and administration, presented the recommended spring 2026 youth activities grants and said the county received 82 applications this cycle. "The review panels recommend awarding 26 applications in the total amount of 1,286,919," Yang said, with awards divided among arts and music ($146,018), equipment ($101,901), play areas ($900,000) and lifeguard services ($139,000).
Yang said the awards would allow an estimated 30,000 children of all abilities to benefit from increased access to youth activities. Commissioners thanked staff and asked follow-up questions: Commissioner Lundy highlighted working with the Brooklyn Center school district, and Commissioner Edelson asked about the sustainability of the ballpark sales-tax funding that supports play grants and whether staff could provide projections of when those funds might run out.
The committee approved the grant recommendations by voice vote.
