Residents press council on potholes, speed bumps and need for more police presence

At the Aug. 13 council meeting, residents raised several neighborhood concerns during the public‑comment period. Jennifer Robinson asked whether the ambulance payoff had to be on the agenda, inquired about a pothole at Illinois Avenue and Bryan Street, asked whether there had been complaints about speed bumps and noted that a name had been removed from the town website; Mayor Sam Maxson replied that Jim Link had resigned and that Officer Nathan Lanham is no longer employed by the Nutter Fort Police Department.

Robinson’s questions prompted staff responses: Treasurer Leslie Cummings said the ambulance payoff was part of the earlier fleet discussion; Public Works Supervisor Taylor Keith said the pothole would be addressed during upcoming paving and that a few complaints about regulation speed bumps had been received but painting would occur after paving. Robinson asked, “Where it was just approved to pay off ambulances, does it have to be on agenda?” which was addressed by the treasurer in the discussion.

Resident Kenneth Johnson requested a speed bump on Maryland Avenue and raised concerns about seeing more homeless individuals and drug users in town, asking, “When can we get more police protection in this town?” Mayor Maxson said increased police presence is in progress but did not provide a timeline. The meeting adjourned at 7:31 p.m.
