Board adds AVID classes for Hilton Head middle and high schools

The Beaufort County School Board unanimously approved local board–approved (LBA) AVID courses for Hilton Head Island Middle School (grades 6–8) and Hilton Head Island High School (9th grade AVID).
Dr. Smith and Karen McKenzie presented course outlines and said teacher units and professional development will be funded through an existing ChangeMaker grant and incoming GEAR UP funding, which the presenter said will expand the program to additional schools if received. "These courses will start this coming academic school year," the presenter said, noting interview-based student selection and a plan to align AVID with other honors and IB pathways.
Principals from the participating schools described cohort sizes and teacher assignments. One principal said they plan two sections for sixth grade (about 40 students total), a single section for 7th grade and a 20-student 8th grade section, with the program designed to build students' organization, inquiry and college-readiness skills.
Board members praised AVID's potential to reduce disciplinary referrals and improve school culture, and asked staff to track outcomes such as disciplinary incidents and academic progress as the program grows. The motion to approve was made and seconded; the board recorded a unanimous vote.
