Sanilac County commissioners direct RFP for new Animal Control building

Following months of committee work and revised cost estimates, the board instructed county staff to issue a request for proposals for a new Animal Control building and said the project is expected to be put out for bids with proposals collected over about two months.
The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners instructed county administration on Oct. 1 to issue a request for proposals for construction firms to submit bids for a new Animal Control building.
Chair John Black told the board that commissioners who sit on the buildings and grounds committee have worked on final drawings. Administrator Nathan was directed to put the RFP out and return proposals to the board; Nathan said the process of collecting submissions will likely take about two months. Commissioner Gary Heberling and others said earlier estimates for the project had been as high as $1.5 million, but after redesign and contract work committee members expect a substantially lower figure — “probably gonna be probably, what, 0.5 of that 1,500,000,” Heberling said — adding that the committee and ARPA funds should allow the county to avoid direct expense to residents.
The board did not adopt a construction contract at the meeting; it directed staff to solicit bids and return with proposals and cost information for review.
