Senior Project Fresh: Sanilac County reports 80.7% coupon redemption in 2023

MSU Extension presented county-level results from Senior Project Fresh, a state-distributed program that provides coupons to older adults to buy fresh Michigan produce.
"The total coupons spent in Sanilac County in 2023 was 604," said Mary Gilbert, community nutrition instructor with MSU Extension, who presented the program data. Gilbert explained that 750 coupons had been allocated to the county in 2023, producing an 80.67% redemption rate, and that 200 of the coupon books had been purchased locally through the Council on Aging.
Gilbert outlined program eligibility (60 years or older, or 55 and older and a member of a federally recognized tribe), distribution procedures (participants call the extension educator to select a distribution date) and logistics: each booklet contains five $5 coupons (total $25 per participant) and coupons expire Oct. 31. She added that the state's lead agency and MSU are planning a digital rollout for Senior Project Fresh in 2025, with focus groups planned for October or November to refine the approach.
Board members questioned distribution mechanics and outreach; Gilbert said residents should call or email MSU Extension to reserve a distribution date and that the program traditionally advertises through local partners.
