Auditor gives Sanilac County a clean 2023 opinion; general fund increased

External auditors told the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners the county received a clean, unmodified opinion on the 2023 financial statements.
"Our opinion on the audit was an unmodified or a clean opinion," said Greg Soule, partner in charge of the county audit, in his presentation to commissioners. Soule summarized key statistics: total net position was about $14.9 million (governmental activities $6.8M; business-type activities $8.1M), with an overall increase of roughly $1.9 million year over year. He reported total general fund revenues of $15.7 million and expenditures of about $11.2 million, leaving a general fund balance of $2.98 million, of which $2.6 million was unassigned.
Soule said the auditors issued the required communications, government auditing standards reports and state filings on time and identified no reportable internal-control deficiencies that required board action. The board accepted the audit report later in the meeting during new business.
