Board approves fence replacement at 2331 Hill Ave after neighbor support

At its April 23, 2026 meeting, the Brentwood Board of Adjustment unanimously approved a fence replacement for 2331 Hill Avenue, following staff remarks and a neighbor letter of support. The motion to approve was made by Mike Besmer and seconded by Kristen McDaniels; the board also instructed staff to prepare findings of fact and conclusions of law.
Property owner Brigid Andrews, sworn for the item, said her proposal is “an improvement on the existing non-conforming fence.” Ms. Kelly, the staff member presenting the case, explained the map and setback lines and told the board that the proposed placement likely requires a variance but moves the fence toward conformity; she noted code changes before 2024 affected openness calculations. Andrews said she chose wood over wrought iron because “it was a $3000 difference” and pointed to gates in disrepair as part of the rationale for replacement. Neighbor Clinton Trautman read a letter from Karen Smith expressing support for the replacement.
Acting city attorney Mary Schnellmann entered the item into the record prior to the vote. The board approved the request by roll call with all members voting in favor. The meeting also listed a Director of Planning and Development report and adjourned at 7:23 p.m.
