Council-directed deferral pushed Dorset Street paving to next year to coordinate pedestrian upgrades

Public Works staff explained why the planned Dorset Street repaving was delayed: to accommodate improved pedestrian infrastructure and underground electrical work near the middle and high school. Erica Qualen (S8) said the delayed approach was chosen so the city does not repave and then reopen the pavement for conduit work, and that the council directed staff to wait a year to produce a more robust project.
Tim Barrett (S10), speaking as a City Council member, clarified the financial implication: this year's paving budget of about $1,000,000 was allocated to the Dorset section and was deferred into next year's plan, which will result in a larger paving program next summer. Barrett also noted interim repairs were done recently to fill the worst ruts.
Qualen said the DPW is assembling a five-year paving plan and will post paving schedules on the DPW website; commissioners and residents asked for visibility into that plan and mapping of pavement scores. "We ended up delaying by 1 year so that we could include better designs around the pedestrian infrastructure," Qualen said. "Next year will be a very long paving list."
