Colfax police report hire, academy start and $250,000 grant application

Police Chief Michael Melcher updated the council on staffing and an active grant application during the department reports on Feb. 2.
Melcher said Ivan Martinez's official start date will be April 1 and that Martinez is scheduled to begin the Police Academy on April 19. Melcher added that he has been purchasing uniforms and equipment to have the new officer prepared for the start date. He told the council he submitted a grant application to the Public Safety Funding Program for $250,000, which he said "could pay for 75% of 2 positions over a 3-year period." Year-to-date department figures Melcher cited were 146 traffic stops, nine criminal cases and 77 calls for service.
Melcher said he will attend records training and likely miss the next council meeting; no formal council action followed from the report.
