Caltrans to study four corridor alternatives for long-term Highway 101 improvements; draft EIR expected early 2027

Caltrans District 5 said it is carrying out environmental review for a long-term corridor improvement that would relocate the Chualar and Abbott interchanges, construct new county connector roads and study four alternatives, project manager Meg Henry said. "We are anticipating circulating a draft environmental document. It will be an EIR, environmental impact report, in early 20 27," Henry said.
Henry said the corridor project is still in the study phase, with two candidate relocation sites under consideration for each interchange and ongoing coordination with Monterey County public works on local road connections. The district plans public open houses this fall and expects to finalize the environmental document in late 2027. Caltrans emphasized the long-term project will follow the full environmental review and community input process and that the near-term safety barrier work is a distinct, interim measure.
Caltrans said it is working closely with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County and local stakeholders — including agricultural operators and community representatives — on siting and traffic impacts. The district encouraged residents to sign up for email updates through its project portal and to attend scheduled outreach meetings in October for more details ahead of the draft EIR circulation early next year.
