Board approves move of exterior staircase at 14 Wawatesset Road

The Harwich Board of Appeals granted a special permit at its July 29 meeting to relocate an exterior basement staircase at 14 Wawatesset (Wawa Tessie) Road.
Attorney Michael Donovan, representing the J and L Realty Trust, told the board the only change from an earlier approved raise-and-replace plan was the location of the exterior stairs; moving the stairs to the north rear of the building will increase the setback there to over 9 feet, he said. "We're actually improving the setback in that area," Donovan argued, and described the relocation as an improvement rather than a detriment.
Town departments including highway, fire, police and building/planning submitted no concerns. The board discussed egress and confirmed planned conditions requiring appropriate egress and that construction vehicles be parked on-site where possible. The board voted to grant the special permit with the stated conditions and to record the decision in the minutes.
