Interim finance staff reported that the town is under-collecting current-year taxes, which has created pressure on the general fund and left the highway budget running a deficit. "By $206,000," the interim treasurer told the board when asked for a figure on the shortfall.
Board members discussed options including additional reminders, interest penalties and further investigation of the underlying causes. The board moved and approved a motion allowing staff to send reminder letters to current-year taxpayers on May 1. Members asked staff to prepare additional detail for the board ahead of potential budget adjustments or year-end reconciliations.
