Sylvia Zapata, the county's HR director, provided a quick insurance update during the July 27 commissioners court meeting, telling the court the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) initiated the property claim and had catastrophe contractor Gerloff on site within hours to begin inventory and remediation.
Zapata said TAC’s policy has a single deductible of $25,000 covering the courthouse and other damaged county buildings; the insurer has issued a $100,000 advance payment to help with immediate equipment and furniture needs for relocated offices. Catastrophe contractors are inventorying county-owned items from the basement to determine salvageability and expected restoration costs; some paper records have been judged unsalvageable and a contracted shredding company will assist with disposal.
Zapata also said that asbestos testing in portions of the basement has identified small, contained amounts that contractors will treat during removals and that electrical breaker repairs are expected to start quickly, though elevator replacement and mold remediation remain longer-term issues. County officials said insurance will cover certain moving, cleaning and emergency replacement costs but that final tallies remain pending inventory results.
