County accepts Youth Bureau grants for family events and children's swim lessons

The Health and Mental Health Committee unanimously accepted two Orange County Youth Bureau awards on Feb. 18: $15,000 for Family Center and community events held at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, and $7,000 to provide seven-week swim lessons for children ages 6–12 at SUNY Orange's Middletown campus. Gretchen Riordan said the family events will include positive youth-development activities and support for families with children who have special health care needs; swim lessons will be offered to those same families.
"The funds would be used for positive youth development days and their children with special health care needs families and will focus on positive social interactions," Riordan said. Committee members asked for logistical details (timing and location on SUNY campuses) and were told the lessons will be in Middletown. Both appropriations were moved and approved without objection.
