The Public Safety & Emergency Services Committee voted to appropriate $750,000 from the federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program to create six grant-funded Deputy Sheriff positions that will be abolished when the grant ends.
Chief Meredith McGovern described the county’s recruitment and community-policing efforts tied to the grant. “This is a competitive federal award program and the purpose of it is to provide funding to law enforcement agencies to hire additional officers to increase community policing and crime prevention efforts,” she said, and outlined plans for a Law Enforcement Associates apprenticeship to create a civilian pathway into deputy positions.
Committee members discussed outreach programs designed to build trust and broaden the recruitment pool. The motion to accept and appropriate the funds carried unanimously at the committee level and will be forwarded to the full Legislature per normal procedure.
