Select Board discusses scaling treasurer duties after unsuccessful recruitment

The Select Board held an extended discussion about the vacant treasurer position and whether to downscale duties for the remainder of the term to attract candidates. The Chair said the board had not been able to recruit someone with the right experience and that town staff and contractors had been covering many functions. Connie, who presented the options, said the town had advertised for a full-scope treasurer and received no qualified applicants and suggested reducing the role to the statutory minimum with NEMREC handling tax administration.
Connie said the reduced scope would cover statutory reporting and check-signing while NEMREC would provide payroll and many back-office functions. Board members agreed to reach out to candidates with the reduced-scope description and return to the next meeting with offers and proposed compensation. "We are not finding anybody who wants to take on a robust treasurer's position...if we downscale the duties, but yet keep it within the legal requirements, could we entice somebody to come in and fill those duties?" Connie said during the discussion.
