Council waives 2026 farmers‑market fee, plans ordinance for 2027
Summary
Council voted to waive business‑license fees for the Brown County Farmers Market for 2026 because the market is opening imminently; members agreed to adopt a formal farmers‑market ordinance and to apply fees starting in 2027.

Council discussed whether the Brown County Farmers Market should require a single market business license or individual itinerant licenses for each vendor. Staff noted the itinerant license currently costs $10 per day (up to 15 days a year) and that waivers have been in place since 2020.
Because the market season is about to start and a formal farmers‑market ordinance is not yet adopted, council moved to waive the 2026 fees with explicit notice that fees would be reinstated in 2027 once an ordinance is in place. "Let's make a motion to waive this year's fee with the understanding that next year, they will have the fee," the chair said before the council approved the waiver by voice vote.
Staff and council asked for volunteers to do outreach during market days to explain that the town is developing an ordinance and to collect feedback that could inform the rules for 2027.
