Mayor Hopkins told the council that the city received a quote from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) for $293,779 and a competing CIAW bid of $211,014, a difference of roughly $82,000. He said the move was prompted by substantial premium increases and by a view that AWC's package included coverages the city does not need—for example, earthquake and personal property coverage at levels the mayor described as disproportionate to the city's exposure.
Councilmember Jensen said she was uncomfortable foregoing earthquake coverage but the mayor argued the savings were significant given the city's current budget shortfall. After discussion, Councilmember Syler moved to approve RES 817, Jensen seconded for purposes of discussion, and the resolution passed 3‑0.
