County review committee recommends nearly all Fall 2024 matching grants; one startup referred to SEDC
Summary
Somerset County received 13 Matching Grant applications for Fall 2024; the review committee recommended all but one. The committee recommended referring an Anson startup's refurbishing proposal to SEDC for a small-business loan, and a Skowhegan email-upgrade request will return for action Dec. 18.
Administrator Tim Curtis reported that 13 applications for the Fall 2024 Matching Grant program were reviewed on Dec. 2. The review committee recommended funding for all applications except one: a start-up business from Anson seeking funds to refurbish a building, which the committee determined did not meet program criteria and recommended referral to SEDC for a small-business loan.
Commissioner Joel Stetkis asked about a Skowhegan application to upgrade the town's email system for compliance; I/T Director Pawel Bialczak and Administrator Curtis said they had met with Skowhegan officials and that the Matching Grant program had been mentioned as a potential funding source. Commissioners questioned whether the email system upgrade offers a broad community benefit; Administrator Curtis said he would bring all grant requests back to the commission for action at the Dec. 18 meeting.
No funding approvals were finalized at this meeting; commissioners directed staff to return with full recommendations and any additional information needed to determine community benefit.
