Somerset County Commissioners reviewed proposed updates to the county employee handbook at their Nov. 6 meeting and signaled consensus on several personnel-policy changes.
County Administrator Tim Curtis summarized new required language from the Department of Labor and the State of Maine and presented options on the health-insurance buyout and vacation accrual. Commissioners agreed to extend the health-insurance buyout from four months' premium to six months and to begin vacation accrual after three months of employment rather than six. They also agreed to cap vacation accrual at 240 hours for employees with more than 15 years of service and to grandfather existing non-union employees who have already accrued 280 hours. "Several years ago non-union employees had a six-month probationary period, but it was moved to 12 months approximately five years ago," Curtis said; commissioners voted to revert to a six-month probationary period.
The board scheduled a final vote to adopt the revised handbook at its next meeting. The changes were discussed as administrative updates rather than formal budget items; the county did not specify projected fiscal impacts in the meeting minutes.
