Commission OKs $70,000 TIF aid for Lexington Highlanders groomer; funding source amended

Somerset County commissioners voted Sept. 18 to provide $70,000 from tax-increment financing (TIF) to help the Lexington Highlanders snowmobile club purchase a trail groomer.
David Spencer told the board the total expense of the groomer was "approximately $150,000." The TIF Committee recommended the support to maximize state matching funds; commissioners also considered replenishing trail maintenance funds through a proposed $18,000 Community Benefit allocation. Commissioner Alsop moved to amend the motion so the $18,000 would come from TIF rather than Community Benefit; the amendment and final motion both passed 5-0.
Commissioners said the funding structure would allow the club to leverage additional state funds and preserve trail maintenance accounts. The board recorded the approvals as Resolutions 24-189 and 24-190 and will monitor completion and fund accounting in follow-up reports to the commission.
