Council takes first reading on ADU ordinance to comply with state law

Bruce Dell, the city's Director of Planning, presented Ordinance 632 as the first reading to implement the Maryland General Assembly's ADU law. Dell said the legislation became effective Oct. 1, 2025 and requires local governments to adopt conforming local law by Oct. 1, 2026; he noted Brunswick currently lacks ADU zoning regulations.
The council received the ordinance on first reading and did not vote to adopt it at the June 9 meeting. Staff and council members signaled the item will return for additional review and formal adoption before the October 1, 2026 state compliance deadline.
