Fiscal Court approves request to place Equal Justice Initiative marker for Richard James

The Woodford County Fiscal Court voted to approve the Equal Justice Initiative's request to install a historical marker honoring Richard James at the Woodford County Courthouse Annex and to allow county maintenance and the judge's office to work with the Administrative Office of the Courts on placement. "Our coalition is requesting the use of the Woodford County Courthouse Annex for a historical marker honoring Richard James," Michael Lynn told the court as he introduced the Woodford County Remembrance Coalition.
Lynn said the marker is fully funded by the Equal Justice Initiative and that the coalition hopes to hold a ceremony on March 13, 2027, the 106th anniversary of James' lynching. The court noted the administrative office of the courts and the circuit judge had already approved the marker and voted unanimously to allow the county to proceed with installation steps.
The coalition said the marker would join similar installations in Lexington, Frankfort and other Kentucky communities and serve as an educational and remembrance element on courthouse grounds.
