Selectboard debates buying granite gravel, crushing pit stock to restore road supplies

Selectboard Chair Chuck Martel said the board must decide whether to buy higher-quality granite gravel used on North Fayston Road and to crush additional material at the Town Pit to rebuild long-term stockpiles. “It will cost about $64,000 to crush 8,000 yards of gravel at our Town Pit,” he said, and “It will cost about $35,000 to buy 2,000 yards of the granite gravel.”
Town Treasurer Sarah Stavraky noted the town used more pit material than predicted after the 2024 flood and that the last crushing occurred in 2022. She cautioned that if the board funds Reserve Account #8006 to near $99,000 and the work is completed, “that reserve will be completely used and have to be funded next year.” Selectboard member Ron Graves proposed funding the account to $100,000 now so the town can both crush 8,000 yards and purchase 2,000 yards of granite; the board left the final amount for the upcoming budget meeting and the Jan. 13 public hearing.
The decision affects the town’s longer-term capital plan and how much of this year’s surplus the board will use to lower the tax rate. The Selectboard will finalize the reserve funding amount at the next budget meeting and present the plan to taxpayers at the January public hearing.
