Paducah designates August 8 as Emancipation Day

Mayor Bray introduced and read a resolution formally recognizing August 8 as Emancipation Day in the city of Paducah, saying the proposal came from a community group led by Jeffrey Williams and that the city worked to align wording with local stakeholders.
"As mayor, I am going to move that the board of commissioners adopt a resolution . . . recognizing and memorializing August 8 of each year as Emancipation Day in the city of Paducah," the mayor said. The resolution notes that August 8, 1866, is historically recognized in the region as the date formerly enslaved people first learned of and celebrated their freedom and encourages community organizations and institutions to commemorate the date through events, education, and celebration. The commission seconded the motion and adopted the resolution by unanimous roll call. Staff said the resolution is effective upon adoption.
