Fayston schedules summer knotweed work parties, reports student and intern involvement

The Fayston Conservation Commission detailed an invasive-knotweed response that combines targeted control work and community outreach. Members noted few local volunteers attended the first two events but highlighted involvement by Harwood students working with UVM advisors and a UVM intern, Sarah Ewell, who spoke with children at Fayston Forest Camp and helped with knotweed management on June 24.
The commission set a schedule of Knot Work Parties and tabling dates: July 8 (midday work party 12-2 p.m., Chase Brook at Mt. Ellen/Barton Roads), July 22 (midday 12-2 p.m., Mill Brook at Route 17/German Flats Road), Aug. 5 (Knot Work Party 4-6 p.m., Mill Brook across from Mad River Lodge at 2354 Mill Brook Road), and Aug. 19 (tentative 12-6 p.m. with an afternoon party). Remaining Waitsfield Farmers Market tabling dates are July 11 and Aug. 1. Commission members emphasized balancing knotweed control with ecological restoration and noted native trees along Mill Brook are doing well.
Volunteers are invited to meet at the listed locations and times; the commission said it will continue outreach via the Valley Reporter, FPF and Instagram and will coordinate intern support for the summer schedule.
