Fire mitigation committee urges town support for multi-year CUSP hand-crew work and to earmark Kirkpatrick grant as match

The Fire Mitigation Advisory Committee recommended the board send letters supporting a CUSP grant that would bring hand crews to mitigate fuels in Green Mountain Falls and asked that the funder-awarded Kirkpatrick Family Foundation $65,000 be earmarked as match for that work.
Lisa Huizinga, speaking for the Fire Mitigation Advisory Committee (FMAC), reported the committee secured a Kirkpatrick Family Foundation grant of $65,000 to be used as matching funds for future mitigation grants and asked the board to send a letter committing to work with CUSP hand crews ‘‘over the next 5 to 6 years, depending on price,” to support CUSP’s grant application.
The committee described several community mitigation activities in 2024 — multiple chipper days, Team Rubicon cleanups and public education hikes — and said about 70 acres of private and public land have been remediated. The board discussed CUSP’s role as a grant broker, the administrative burden of federal grants and agreed to send the recommended support letters and to earmark the Kirkpatrick funds as match for CUSP-recommended projects.
