Committee moves bill to bar trustees from serving before confirmation, shifts university term start date

Chairman Slater told the subcommittee HB 1882 would prevent trustees appointed by the governor from serving until confirmed by a joint resolution of the House and Senate and would shift term start dates from July 1 to Feb. 1 so appointments align with the General Assembly session. "So these trustees may not serve until they're confirmed," he said, and the bill provides for extending existing terms to accommodate the change.
Members asked clarifying questions about the bill's reach (limited to university boards of trustees, not all appointment types). The committee approved the bill and sent it to full Education by voice vote (5–0).
