Council approves EV charging program; vendor to pay electricity costs

The council voted to introduce and adopt a plan to place electric-vehicle charging stations in the city’s most active municipal parking lots under Resolution 1-95. City Manager Robert S. Hoffman told the council the city owns roughly 15 parking lots and the project will place chargers in several high-use lots, with selection and number of fast chargers to be confirmed during on-site vendor meetings.
Hoffman said the vendors in the procurement will cover electricity costs, reducing the city's operational burden: "One of the nice things about this particular vendor is that they are paying the electricity costs for the charging station. So this is not something that's falling on the city." Council members asked whether noncharging vehicles would be ticketed, whether there would be maximum charging times and what rates would be applied for Level 2 versus Level 3 stations; Hoffman said those operational details (time limits, management fees, and per-use pricing) will be refined with the vendor and reflected in the implementation plan.
