At the Sept. 23 special meeting a committee member reported that FY25 maintenance had been budgeted at $20,000 but actual spending reached $43,770, prompting concerns about whether to increase maintenance allocations if the town keeps trucks longer.
Members discussed specific drivers of the overrun, including more expensive tires and warranty and repair incidents that exceeded expectations. Chair said keeping trucks longer may be feasible only if the town budgets more for maintenance or otherwise accepts higher long-term costs.
Board members asked staff to start allocating maintenance charges to truck-specific account numbers so future budgeting and decisions can be based on vehicle-level expenditure history. "I'm gonna clear the account number for each truck," said a Committee member, describing how repairs and parts will be tracked per vehicle.
The board will incorporate the revised maintenance estimates into the equipment spreadsheet and present updated scenarios during the next equipment-review meeting so the budget for the next fiscal year reflects the board’s retention choices.
