The Tinmouth Select Board agreed by consensus at a special meeting Sept. 23 to keep the Black International truck as a spare and to stagger future truck replacements rather than trading two trucks at once. Chair said the town will rotate the two Internationals and extend the service life of the new Peterbilt.
Board members cited rising market prices for heavy trucks as a reason to stagger replacements. Staff member said replacement costs have risen dramatically — “they're going up $75,000 a whack” — and members discussed extending some vehicles’ service life to reduce capital pressure.
The board discussed concrete next steps: maintain the Peterbilt for 10–15 years, keep the black truck as the spare, and revisit the plan when Ronnie’s truck is next scheduled for replacement. The decision was recorded as a consensus rather than a formal vote and will be captured in the equipment spreadsheet and future review meetings.
The board instructed staff to track maintenance and resale/trade-in estimates tied to each vehicle so the finance projections reflect the chosen rotation plan. A follow-up review of the rotation and trade-in assumptions is slated for the board’s regular review cycle.
