The Merrillville Redevelopment Commission voted 5–0 on July 28 to award BS Engineering a contract to provide construction inspection and supervision services for the Catherine Street sidewalk and drainage project in the Merrillville Heights neighborhood.
Benjamin Eldridge of BS Engineering identified himself for the record and told commissioners: "The $80,000 is for the inspections of the project, which is required for federal aid projects as paperwork gets submitted to INDOT. The design work for the project is done and the construction cost is 1,350,000. If it's come in as expected, the local portion will be 270,000. The project bids in November, construction is to start next year, and the inspection cost is a 100% local." Eldridge also gave his business address for the record.
Staff told the commission that the $80,000 inspection fee is locally funded and that the anticipated total construction cost is $1.35 million, with a 20% local match of about $270,000. Commissioners were told bids are expected in November and construction would begin the following year. Chair Sean Petty and staff emphasized that approving the inspection contract allows the town to proceed with preparing specifications and soliciting bids.
Commissioner Mark Uzelak moved to award the agreement and Commissioner Keisha Hardway seconded. The secretary called the roll; commissioners voted unanimously in favor and the motion carried. Staff noted the spending plan can be modified during the year to accommodate the local match and related contract obligations.
