The Hampton City Council voted Aug. 14 to establish a sister‑city relationship with the province of Melange in Angola.
Staff described existing sister‑city links (Southampton, England; Vosges, France; Anyon, South Korea; and Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) and recommended the new relationship to promote cultural exchange and development. Vice Mayor Gray and Councilwoman Harper, who participated in a delegation visit to Melange in June, told council the Angolan government rolled out an official visit schedule and that national leaders expressed interest in participating in the signing ceremony. "They are very interested in, developing the, permanent relationship through the sister city, arrangement," Vice Mayor Gray said. The council approved the resolution and authorized the mayor and clerk to complete the formalities.
