Hampton Police Division recertified as a Certified Crime Prevention Community

Tina Sumter of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services presented the city with a recertification plaque on Aug. 14, recognizing Hampton as a Certified Crime Prevention Community.
Sumter said the program, created by the Department of Criminal Justice Services and approved by the Commission in the 1990s, requires communities to meet 19 community safety elements, including 12 core elements and seven optional elements. "I am Tina Sumter from the Department of Criminal Justice Services. I am honored this evening to be before you to present the Hampton Police Division with the certification," she said, and noted Hampton has been certified since 2003 and was recertified after a careful review for the next three years.
Council and staff thanked the police division and singled out Sergeant Birdsong for recognition of his role in the recertification work. City officials said the designation reflects collaboration across the police division and broader community partners.
