Arlington committee approves LPN job description, aligns role with Unit D

The Arlington School Committee voted to approve an updated job description for a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and to align the position with the district's Unit D bargaining designation.
Mr. Spiegel, who presented the request, said the LPN is needed for an incoming student and explained the decision to align the role with Unit D because it requires certification but not RN-level training. “The need has come up that we will need an LPN for a student who will be coming into the schools,” Mr. Spiegel said. Ms. Elmer added that RNs remain in the teachers’ unit and an LPN’s scope differs from an RN: “this role doesn't require that same level of training and certification,” she said.
Committee members asked procedural and bargaining questions during the discussion. The AEA representative present signaled agreement with placing the job in Unit D, and the chair moved the item to a roll-call vote. The motion carried with affirmative votes recorded from all members present.
The committee did not yet finalize a memorandum of agreement (MOA) tied to Unit D placement; Mr. Spiegel said an MOA would be needed if the committee confirmed the alignment so salary and contract terms could be formalized.
