Board discovers covered-bridge insurance gap; seeks appraisal and underwriter review

During highway business members raised a concern that the town may not currently have insurance coverage on a covered bridge it co-owns with a neighboring town. Staff (Speaker 5) said a letter from prior years surfaced in the town office and that the state now indicates the town is not listed as insured.
"We don't have insurance on that bridal, and we don't have it on the bridge that we share with Raven," Staff member (Speaker 5) said after reviewing older correspondence. Board members asked for an appraisal and agreed to contact underwriters and the state covered bridge committee. They noted that prior rebuilds and refurbishments may have used different coverage levels and that Middlebury carries a $6,000,000 policy that staff questioned as potentially insufficient.
The board directed staff to trace the paperwork, contact the state committee and bring back recommended steps and cost estimates for insuring the bridge before the next meeting.
