The Boxborough Select Board authorized the town to submit a MassDOT fully integrated application to seek design and engineering funding for the entirety of Liberty Square Road.
Alec, the director of land use, described the proposal as a design-focused application born from community engagement. "I am seeking your authorization to apply for design and engineering funds for the entirety of Liberty Square Road and to end specifically to make Liberty Square Road a more complete street," he said, adding that a 75% design-phase hearing would invite neighbors to discuss potential right-of-way impacts before construction decisions.
Board members asked about the application timeline, other candidate streets, and whether Community Preservation Act funds could play a role; Alec said the integrated portal increases flexibility but may slow review timelines and that a successful design effort would strengthen future construction applications. The board voted to authorize the application and to waive the Select Board public hearing requirement for design-only applications by voice vote, 4-0-0.
