Library district reports strong youth usage despite building closure

Michelle Zilli, regional manager of Pacific County Libraries, gave a quarterly update to the council, describing usage patterns for South Bend patrons and programming highlights. Zilli said the district’s open-data portal holds the detailed figures and noted children made up a large share of active users in 2024.
"So South Bend, as of the end of last year, had a 156 active cardholders...75 of those 156 are kids between 10 and and 15 years old," Zilli said. She also reported roughly 6,000 digital checkouts via Libby in 2024 and about 6,500 physical checkouts. Zilli listed continuing local events such as Bricks and Sips and noted the library produces podcasts that highlight funding and service topics. The presentation reinforced council and public concern during the later library-building conversation about how to restore local access for children.
