Taylor City Council voted June 30 to adopt a resolution opposing further bond issuances tied to the Taylor School District's November 2021 ballot measure. The resolution states roughly $30 million of the originally approved $130 million has been bonded and spent, and it says the district's subsequent plan to renovate rather than build a new high school contradicts ballot language.
The resolution instructs that a copy be forwarded to the Taylor School District and the State Board of Education and requests a state audit to ensure expenditures comply with ballot covenants. Council members asked corporation counsel about the legal reach of a legislative resolution and removed two more aggressive provisions from an earlier draft at counsel's suggestion. Council expressed strong disagreement with the school board's direction but also debated whether the city's measures would be enforceable without additional legal steps.
