The Presenter urged a "new era of patriotism"—one focused on responsibility, service and passing those values to children. "We need a new era of patriotism...that freedom is built here, that responsibility is built here," he said, calling on citizens to be better neighbors and to model civil disagreement.
He said Utahns' volunteerism and community care position the state as an exemplar: "we are perhaps the last best hope of a nation to show a nation what that is because here we still volunteer." The Presenter framed the coming year beginning July 4 as a period to remember and renew civic commitments.
