Jess Jean, associate laboratory director for nuclear science and technology at Idaho National Laboratory, outlined INL's role in fuel development, materials research and testbed operations. "We operate we have 4 react nuke reactors operating on our site," Jean said, noting those reactors are used to qualify fuels and support advanced-reactor demonstrations.
Jean described progress on TRISO (coated-particle) fuel and said INL’s research supported topical reports used by the NRC for licensing reviews. She also described the National Reactor Innovation Center’s testbeds and a revitalized dome being set up for microreactor testing, which developers can use to validate designs without investing in a separate site.
