Council reviews deferred‑maintenance plan for Travis Major Field as city readies operations

City staff presented a deferred‑maintenance and operations plan for Travis Major Field and asked the council for direction on which items to pursue immediately once the city assumes responsibility on Jan. 1. The presentation listed short‑term equipment and operations purchases — including breakaway bases, a pitching mound, batting‑cage shells, a drag mat, a turf groomer, temporary outfield fencing and cleaning services — and identified safety fixes such as backstop padding and dugout repairs as top priorities.

The presenter said capital options — shade structures, party‑deck repairs, netting and eventual turf replacement — could be phased and that staff will coordinate with a private group, Rev Entertainment, which will present additional ideas next week. “So that totals about $103,000 in revenue,” the presenter said, describing tentative rental income that underpins initial operating assumptions. The presentation noted those revenue figures are preliminary and based on early estimates.

Mayor (S1) and several councilmembers said they favored addressing “low‑hanging fruit” safety items first and reviewing Rev Entertainment’s recommendations before committing to larger capital work. Councilman Salvato (S2) urged staff to prioritize safety and an inviting experience for users. Councilman Edge (S9) called out the party deck and shade structures as neglected assets and supported moving forward on safety items before the spring season. Staff said rentals are scheduled to begin Jan. 12 and emphasized some improvements will not be complete by that date but asked for direction so purchasing and short‑term repairs can begin.
