Mayor Greg Habib read a proclamation recognizing November 2024 as South Carolina Native American Heritage Month in Goose Creek and spoke about the long‑standing presence and contributions of local Native American communities.
The proclamation named the Wasmesaw/Varner Town community (referred to in the meeting by several spellings) and recounted historical settlements, educational missions and cultural events such as an annual powwow. The mayor encouraged residents to learn more about local tribal history and to engage with programs that preserve cultural heritage.
Council offered appreciation for the tribe’s ongoing engagement in community and land preservation discussions. No formal council action beyond the proclamation was taken at the meeting.
