Garland staff to review website accessibility, captioning and assistive apps

City staff told the All Abilities Committee they will review website accessibility (WCAG 2.1), install captioning in some facilities and evaluate assistive apps and Wi‑Fi gaps to make meetings and events more accessible.
City staff told the committee they are preparing a website revamp with accessibility in mind and will work with the incoming chief information officer to ensure the site follows accessible design. Staff provided a list of assistive apps and cited WCAG 2.1 as a guideline and noted that the state legislature has been moving toward using similar standards for state websites.
Staff also reported an IT inventory found some facilities — specifically Audubon Rec Center, North Library and South Library — lack captioning/Teams-room technology; remaining installations are in progress and staff said they have some leftover project funds to support rollouts. A committee member asked whether TVs and conference rooms could use phone-to-TV Wi‑Fi solutions for last‑minute captioning; staff said they will investigate Wi‑Fi capabilities across sites and follow up.
"Also, the WCAG 2.1 is a website content accessibility guideline," staff said when introducing the resources. IT staff was thanked for quickly acting on captioning issues in the city’s meeting rooms and for committing to follow up with a facilities inventory.
