The Board approved creating a part-time contractual dementia care navigator position funded by a one-year Maryland Department of Aging grant of $20,810.
Office on Aging staff (speaker 22) told commissioners the grant will fund a grade H18, step 1, part-time position (24 hours per pay period) to assist persons showing dementia symptoms and their caregivers to identify needs, navigate services and remove barriers. Staff said the grant is for one year but that the Maryland Department of Aging expects the program to continue; the board authorized the position by motion and voice vote.
Commissioners and staff emphasized the pressure on caregivers and the limited availability of assisted‑living and memory-care beds in the county; staff noted existing respite care and other supports but said increased demand makes the navigator role a welcome addition to county services.
