At the March 10 Planning and Zoning meeting, a string of neighborhood residents urged commissioners to preserve housing opportunity and neighborhood services rather than allow light-industrial development at 1610 Walnut Street.
Speakers described the area as "aging" and in need of population to attract retail and a grocery store. Dorana Corley, who said she has lived in the neighborhood for decades, told commissioners, "We desperately need a grocery store. We don't need warehouses." Eric Smith and others warned that Walnut and Tarrant streets are not built for heavy truck traffic and predicted increased wear and safety risks if trucks serving a warehouse used local streets.
Several speakers raised health and pollution concerns. Vanessa George, who identified herself as a nurse working in pulmonary research, said residents worry about air quality and asked what measures would replace trees and green space removed for development. Other commenters said the neighborhood has benefited from resident-led renovations and argued that multifamily or mixed-use development would better support local services than industrial uses.
