Council hears staff request to continue smart-cover contract under new company name

The council heard a brief presentation on an administrative item to continue an existing contract for wastewater-monitoring equipment after the original vendor was acquired.
Maryne Scribe, director of public infrastructure, said the smart covers — sensors placed in manholes to detect overflows and trigger staff alerts — were previously under contract with a company that has been bought out. "This is actually to change the name to the new company and to continue their existing contract," she said, and noted the contract amount has been up to $64,000 per year with renewal options and started in 2023.
Council members asked clarifying questions about the devices and whether any external agencies provided funding; staff said the contract is city-funded and that the devices provide advance alerts so crews can respond before incidents escalate.
The item moved forward in the consent agenda.
