Committee hears calls to track IEP/504 status in discipline data to avoid punishing disability‑related behavior

Several members noted that many referrals and suspensions involve students with IEPs or 504 plans and that consistent tracking is needed to understand recidivism and effectiveness of interventions. "A lot of kiddos have 504s... and in those 504s are behaviors constantly because they have a disability," said one committee member, urging attention to whether accommodations are implemented before punitive actions.
The group discussed linking discipline data to special‑education status in anonymized, aggregate form and exploring whether additional behavioral‑health supports or community programs could reduce repeat referrals. Staff were asked to identify what information can be shared while complying with privacy requirements.
